What are special effects?

Per A.S.E.P.O. (The Alliance of special effects and pyrotechnic operators) live action special effects include the following:
  1. Creating any and all atmospheric conditions: Rain, snow, wind, fog, steam, etc.
  2. Traveling an animate or inanimate object through the air to create the illusion of flying.
  3. Causing any item to move without the apparent aid of human contact.
  4. All work concerning the manipulations of water or other liquids including the conveyance of those liquids in whatever form.
  5. Any and all items that float appear to float, submerge, or are propelled by whatever means on or under the surface of water or other liquids.
  6. Any and all work concerned with the creation of fire or any other flame source or the simulation of any fire or flame source including the preparations, safety precautions, and execution of all fire related activity.
  7. The creation of smoke or simulated smoke by whatever means and for whatever purpose.
The descriptions apply whenever and wherever the above mentioned work is performed in conjunction with motion picture, television, theatrical, or operatic production, either in front of a live audience or film or video camera.
